Living with the Sony Xperia Z1 pt 2

As part of our ongoing two weekly road test of the Z1 in the real world (and not in a lab or showing how many polygons the handset can throw round) we thought we would give you a quick update.

Battery is always a fun topic of ours and the Z1 after 2/4 charges is starting to find its legs now battery wise. During the first discharge we were very shocked on the piss poor performance of the web browsing, we managed to munch through 60% of battery in around 3 hours.

However we have taken the handset off charge this AM and given it the real work abuse I would any other phone. 

1) Check the traffic on the school run on Google Maps.

2) Used NFC to attach to the cars Blue & Me Bluetooth system

3) Emails, two voice calls and 10 mins of browsing

Total screen time was 36mins, and the Z1 is telling me I would get 9hrs which kinda adds up if you think an hour for 10% of battery, if we round it up rather than down.

Having moved from a handset which had a removable and OEM replaceable battery, Im not sure how long I could live with this kind of battery performance. We will have to see how it stands up to a day commuting on the trains away from power and with a full hour each way to and from London, away from any power supply, my guess is this handset will be dead inside 6-7hrs. Which is outside of the average 9-10hrs London workers are outside the home.


The other issue we have is the reflection on the screen, blimey is very very reflective. From the title shot at the top of the page you can see how much light is bouncing off the bathroom mirror the Xperias screen, its crazy. We have the supplied screen protector on it too, so when in the car using the handset as a Sat Nav / GPS it can cause some issues if the screen isnt on full brightness.

Talking of using GPS, the fast charge in my car (which is the same rating as the power supply unit that came with the handset), this still isnt enough juice for GPS and Bluetooth and screen on. The Z1 seems to hardly charge at all or in some instances it still loses charge.

Starting today, you can choose to display your badge location on your Google profile. Your Google profile can include online photos, links to your blog or other online profiles, and ways for people to contact you. It also gives you greater control over what people find when they search for your name on Google. Dont have a Google profile? Go to www.google.com/profiles to get started.

To add your location to your Google profile, you first need to enable the Google public location badge. Please keep in mind that your location will be shared publicly with anyone who visits your public profile page, for as long as the badge is enabled. Once youve enabled the Latitude badge, go to the Edit profile page and check the box next to Display my Latitude location. Your Google profile will now display your most recent location if it was updated in the last 24 hours. Note that only your location, not the badge itself, will appear on your profile.

The badge is currently only available in the US, but will be available in more countries soon.

Blackberry Z30 is official

BlackBerry has just announced the Z30 - the smartphone with the largest touchscreen it has even put into production. Moreover, its the first BlackBerry to ship with the companys latest version of BB 10 OS.

The BlackBerry Z30 is built around a 5" Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. This makes the pixel density meter stop at 295 ppi. In its core, the Z30 is powered by a dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset and 2GB of RAM.
Behind the battery back cover lies a 2,880mAh battery and measures 140.7 x 72 x 9.4mm. The larger battery found in the Z30 hasnt made it much thicker than the Z10 - the difference is just 0.1mm. The BlackBerry Z30 supports LTE as well as dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC.
The back of the Z30 holds an 8MP camera with an f/2.2 lens and 1080p video recording capabilities. Video chatting has been taken care of with an 2MP front-facing snapper, which records 720p video.
As we mentioned, the BlackBerry Z30 runs BB 10 OS version 10.2 out of the box. It brings some improvements to the BlackBerry ecosystem including BB Priority Hub, message previews in the lockscreen as well as Wi-Fi Direct support, multiple alarms and standard Unicode emojis.
BlackBerry Q10 and Z10 users would be happy to know that the company will be launching the BB 10 version 10.2 update in mid-October. There might be some delays, which would be due to carrier approval of the update.
BlackBerry hasnt specified any pricing or availability information just yet, but the Z30 is expected to hit the UK as early as next week. Well keep you posted when more information becomes available.(GSMArena)

Motorolas new patent for lie detecting microphone neck tattoo brings the Orwellian future even closer

Back in the dark days of March 2012, we told you about Nokias patent application for a removable ferromagnetic ink tattoo that would send you haptic feedback whenever your phone receives a call. Different callers could be tied to different vibration patterns so that you could tell who is calling without having to look at your phone. Now, Motorola has received a patent for a similar, but functionally different idea.

Motorolas idea is to place a skin tattoo sticker on your neck to be used as a microphone, sending signals to your Motorola Moto X or the latest version of the Motorola DROID. The microphone would be able to send a clearer sound to your handset as it would eliminate background noise. The tattoo would come with its own transceiver, antenna, microphone and signal processor. For some reason not explained, the tattoo would also come with a screen even though the placement of the sticker would preclude you from looking at it. The Moto sticker tattoo will also have a power supply unit “configured to receive energizing signals from a personal area network” associated with the smartphone you carry.


And wait, theres more. Motorola adds that the tattoo could include a skin detector that could help determine if someone is talking in the confident manner of someone telling the truth. Thats right, the tattoo patch could double as a lie detector. Sounds like we might not see too many politicians using Motorola handsets in the future.

iOS 7 1 Beta 4 Is Not Jailbreakable Stay Away!

iOS 7.1 beta 4 was released just a couple of days back and the feedback from testers and developers is that Apple patched some of the exploits which the Evad3rs used in the Evasion7 tool to jailbreak iOS 7.

Evasi0n 7 was the tool released by the Evad3rs team just before Christmas to jailbreak all iDevices running iOS 7.0 to 7.1 beta 2. By the time Apple released 7.1 beta 3, there were indications that Apple have started putting things to start patching the exploits. 

On releasing iOS 7.1 beta 4, it was noticed that Apple have patched critical exploits used by the Evasi0n tool used in jailbreaking the new iOS 7. What this means is that it wont be possible yet to jailbreak the iOS 7.1 beta 4.

According to @iH8sn0w, there wont be any update to the Evasi0n tool to try jailbreaking iOS 7.1 beta 4. Invariably, people that value their jailbreak should stay away from the iOS 7.1 beta 4.

At the moment, there is no word on whether the Evad3rs team will make a jailbreak for the GM version of iOS 7.1 or maybe they will wait for the next iOS version (iOS 8.0).

Whatever it is, we shall keep you posted on all things jailbreak as it pertains to iOS 7.1 or future iOS releases.
