CES 2014 Qualcomms Snapdragon 805 detects pen input via ultrasound

The Snapdragon 805 chip will end up in some of the hottest smartphones and tablets of the year (we’re already hearing rumors about it powering the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One+), but Qualcomm is only just starting to show its true potential.

Now, Qualcomm lifts the veil over one more new feature of the Snapdragon 805 called Ultra Sound NotePad. Behind that sophisticated name lies an exciting new possibility - being able to write or draw with your pen on a regular piece of paper, and having your nearby laying tablet picking all your creations. The video demonstration below is mind-blowing, showing how you can write on a Snapdragon 805 tablet with a regular stylus, and then showing a person jotting down something on a piece of paper, and the tablet copying it to the tee in real time.

How is this even possible? The magic hides in microphones placed in the tablet. These microphones pick up ultrasonic vibrations from the pen and the Snapdragon chip is then able to decipher them into an accurate copy of all that’s written.
