Living with the Sony Xperia Z1 pt 2

As part of our ongoing two weekly road test of the Z1 in the real world (and not in a lab or showing how many polygons the handset can throw round) we thought we would give you a quick update.

Battery is always a fun topic of ours and the Z1 after 2/4 charges is starting to find its legs now battery wise. During the first discharge we were very shocked on the piss poor performance of the web browsing, we managed to munch through 60% of battery in around 3 hours.

However we have taken the handset off charge this AM and given it the real work abuse I would any other phone.

1) Check the traffic on the school run on Google Maps.

2) Used NFC to attach to the cars Blue & Me Bluetooth system

3) Emails, two voice calls and 10 mins of browsing

Total screen time was 36mins, and the Z1 is telling me I would get 9hrs which kinda adds up if you think an hour for 10% of battery, if we round it up rather than down.

Having moved from a handset which had a removable and OEM replaceable battery, Im not sure how long I could live with this kind of battery performance. We will have to see how it stands up to a day commuting on the trains away from power and with a full hour each way to and from London, away from any power supply, my guess is this handset will be dead inside 6-7hrs. Which is outside of the average 9-10hrs London workers are outside the home.

The other issue we have is the reflection on the screen, blimey is very very reflective. From the title shot at the top of the page you can see how much light is bouncing off the bathroom mirror the Xperias screen, its crazy. We have the supplied screen protector on it too, so when in the car using the handset as a Sat Nav / GPS it can cause some issues if the screen isnt on full brightness.

Talking of using GPS, the fast charge in my car (which is the same rating as the power supply unit that came with the handset), this still isnt enough juice for GPS and Bluetooth and screen on. The Z1 seems to hardly charge at all or in some instances it still loses charge.

Anyway. we will carry on, more soon !!

Samsung SC MM10S

Video cameras using a memory card format are able to achieve an ultra compact design. Because they record highly compressed video, theyre best suited for gadget lovers who want to use their footage mainly on Web sites and in email.

Digital camcorders that record MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 to memory cards may be picky about the cards you use since those encoding schemes require the ability to write to the card more quickly than most standard cards can handle.

Allows for very compact camcorders. Easy searching and random access to video segments. Selectable image quality levels, including high quality variable bit rate recording.

Both video and still images are recorded on disc (instead of on a cassette and a memory card). Relatively short recording times. Video is highly compressed.

BlackBerry has just announced the Z30 - the smartphone with the largest touchscreen it has even put into production. Moreover, its the first BlackBerry to ship with the companys latest version of BB 10 OS.

The BlackBerry Z30 is built around a 5" Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. This makes the pixel density meter stop at 295 ppi. In its core, the Z30 is powered by a dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset and 2GB of RAM.
Behind the battery back cover lies a 2,880mAh battery and measures 140.7 x 72 x 9.4mm. The larger battery found in the Z30 hasnt made it much thicker than the Z10 - the difference is just 0.1mm. The BlackBerry Z30 supports LTE as well as dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC.
The back of the Z30 holds an 8MP camera with an f/2.2 lens and 1080p video recording capabilities. Video chatting has been taken care of with an 2MP front-facing snapper, which records 720p video.
As we mentioned, the BlackBerry Z30 runs BB 10 OS version 10.2 out of the box. It brings some improvements to the BlackBerry ecosystem including BB Priority Hub, message previews in the lockscreen as well as Wi-Fi Direct support, multiple alarms and standard Unicode emojis.
BlackBerry Q10 and Z10 users would be happy to know that the company will be launching the BB 10 version 10.2 update in mid-October. There might be some delays, which would be due to carrier approval of the update.
BlackBerry hasnt specified any pricing or availability information just yet, but the Z30 is expected to hit the UK as early as next week. Well keep you posted when more information becomes available.(GSMArena)

Motorolas new patent for lie detecting microphone neck tattoo brings the Orwellian future even closer

Back in the dark days of March 2012, we told you about Nokias patent application for a removable ferromagnetic ink tattoo that would send you haptic feedback whenever your phone receives a call. Different callers could be tied to different vibration patterns so that you could tell who is calling without having to look at your phone. Now, Motorola has received a patent for a similar, but functionally different idea.

Motorolas idea is to place a skin tattoo sticker on your neck to be used as a microphone, sending signals to your Motorola Moto X or the latest version of the Motorola DROID. The microphone would be able to send a clearer sound to your handset as it would eliminate background noise. The tattoo would come with its own transceiver, antenna, microphone and signal processor. For some reason not explained, the tattoo would also come with a screen even though the placement of the sticker would preclude you from looking at it. The Moto sticker tattoo will also have a power supply unit “configured to receive energizing signals from a personal area network” associated with the smartphone you carry.

And wait, theres more. Motorola adds that the tattoo could include a skin detector that could help determine if someone is talking in the confident manner of someone telling the truth. Thats right, the tattoo patch could double as a lie detector. Sounds like we might not see too many politicians using Motorola handsets in the future.

“… galvanic skin response detector to detect skin resistance of a user. It is contemplated that a user that may be nervous or engaging in speaking falsehoods may exhibit different galvanic skin response than a more confident, truth telling individual. “ - Motorola

iOS 7 1 Beta 4 Is Not Jailbreakable Stay Away!

iOS 7.1 beta 4 was released just a couple of days back and the feedback from testers and developers is that Apple patched some of the exploits which the Evad3rs used in the Evasion7 tool to jailbreak iOS 7.

Evasi0n 7 was the tool released by the Evad3rs team just before Christmas to jailbreak all iDevices running iOS 7.0 to 7.1 beta 2. By the time Apple released 7.1 beta 3, there were indications that Apple have started putting things to start patching the exploits.

On releasing iOS 7.1 beta 4, it was noticed that Apple have patched critical exploits used by the Evasi0n tool used in jailbreaking the new iOS 7. What this means is that it wont be possible yet to jailbreak the iOS 7.1 beta 4.

According to @iH8sn0w, there wont be any update to the Evasi0n tool to try jailbreaking iOS 7.1 beta 4. Invariably, people that value their jailbreak should stay away from the iOS 7.1 beta 4.

At the moment, there is no word on whether the Evad3rs team will make a jailbreak for the GM version of iOS 7.1 or maybe they will wait for the next iOS version (iOS 8.0).

Whatever it is, we shall keep you posted on all things jailbreak as it pertains to iOS 7.1 or future iOS releases.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Edition released

Related Articles - LG G Pad 8.3 Google Edition , Nexus 7 (2013) White

We saw the clues coming about the LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition which was just released into the Google Play store, but the Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition had us a bit surprised. Sony has always been a close collaborator with Google in the Android Open Source Project, and it has long been assumed that there would be a Google Play Edition Sony device eventually, and that time is now.

When we went to the Google Play store to check the listing for the newly announced LG G Pad 8.3 GPE, we saw that there was another listing: the Sony Z Ultra GPE, which is now officially the first phablet to be in the Google Play Edition lineup. As with other Google Play Edition devices, the Sony Z Ultra GPE is the same as the Sony Xperia Z Ultra on hardware, but is running stock Android 4.4 KitKat. This means that you get the same 6.4-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 800 SoC clocked at 2.2GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 8MP rear camera with Sonys Exmor RS sensor, 2MP front camera, and 3000mAh battery.

Thats a lot of phone right there. As you would also expect from a Google Play Edition device, the Z Ultra is unlocked and selling at full unlocked pricing: $649. It is available right now in the Play Store for U.S. customers, no word on international availability.

The one odd thing about this listing is that unlike the other GPE devices, the Play Store listing does have the device as the Sony Z Ultra, without the Xperia branding unlike the LG G Pad and Samsung Galaxy GPE devices. It may not mean anything, but it was a curious note. We havent yet seen an official announcement from Sony, so there may be an explanation of the name change coming.PhoneArena

Distracted driving and cell phones

"Distracted driving" is when you drive while taking your hands off the steering wheel, your eyes off the road, or your mind off of driving. Whether you are eating while driving or using your cell phone while driving, distracted driving increases your chances of getting into a serious accident. Today, organizations throughout the US are collaborating to raise the awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. Read more about what the Google Maps team is doing with the Oprah Winfrey Show.

With the exception of Google Maps Navigation, which is designed for hands-free use with a car dock, Google Mobile products are not intended to be used while you are driving. Hand your phone to a passenger or park your car in a safe place if you need to search for a restaurant or check your email while behind the wheel.

For more information about distracted driving and how you can help prevent it, please visit www.distracteddriving.gov. And if youre in the US and have an iPhone, Palm Pre, or Android-powered device, you can go to Google.com in your browser today to see our mobile doodle. Do not do this while you are driving, of course.

Apple to hold special event on October 23 new iPads may be on tow

Apple will hold an invitation-only event on October 22nd to show off its new iPads, as well as the new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks release, according to a report from All Things D’s John Paczkowski.

That timing seems just right for the new iPads to make an appearance — last year’s event was held on October 23rd — and Apple has previously slated OS X Mavericks for a ‘fall’ release. It also makes some sense for Apple to talk about the Mac pro, also slated for fall, and to hopefully deliver us a release date.

The new iPads will include a full-size iPad and new iPad mini. It’s unclear whether Apple will up the Mini to Retina resolution this time around, but that seems fairly likely. The larger iPad is expected to get trimmed down bezels and a thinner casing and, we would assume, will also get the A7. A report last month from CE’s Micah Singleton pegged the iPad event date and says that Apple’s iPad mini will not get the A7 processor, instead relying on Apple’s A6, currently used in the iPhone 5C. The All Things D report says that the mini will get the A7. There have been some leaks that point to the new iPads getting Apple’s new TouchID fingerprint recognition as well, hence the image above, but that’s unconfirmed as of yet.

If the releases of Apple’s iPhone 5S are an indication, the new iPads may come in Space Grey, Gold and traditional silver.

October 22nd is also the date that another couple of tech events are slated to take place, including the arrival of Microsoft’s Surface 2 for sale and Nokia’s fall event, where it’s expected to announce six new devices including a tablet. techcrunch

Faster dialing with Google Voice on Android and Blackberry devices

(Cross-posted with the Google Voice Blog)

At Google we are obsessed with speed. Our mantra is faster = better. This is true for our Google Voice mobile apps as well. When you want to make a call, your phone should connect you as quickly as possible, whether you’re calling via Google Voice or not.

Today we are launching an enhancement to the Google Voice mobile app on Android and Blackberry phones, which makes placing calls much faster. We call this feature “direct access numbers.” Here’s how it works:

Until today, the Google Voice app had to make a request to the Google Voice server every time you wanted to make a call to send us the phone number you wanted to dial. Then the call would be connected via a Google Voice access number. With direct access numbers, we assign a unique phone number to every person you call. This means that we no longer need to use your data network to access the server each time you make a call, so calls will be placed much faster.

The updated Android app is available from Android Market starting today. For Blackberry users, you can download the app by visiting http://m.google.com/voice from your mobile device. You will need a valid Google Voice account to use the app, and at this time, Google Voice is available in the US only.

Samsungs curved display smartphone might be unveiled this week

Minutes after LG unveiling its 6” flexible screen, Samsung confirms that it will outpace its Korean rival with a 5.7” flexible screen of its own and with a real device featuring the technology. Good news is that Samsung’s first flexible screen smartphone is expected to launch… this week, according to Korean media reporting on the flexible display unveiling.

Chances are that Samsung will unveil the rumored special limited edition Galaxy Note 3 with a bendable display. Yes, that means Samsung Display is already mass producing the 5.7” displays.

The new alleged flexible screen will be extremely lightweight at just 5.2 grams, lighter than LG’s 6” display. It will also be remarkably thin at just 0.12mm. The screen will support the full 1080 x 1920 pixel full HD resolution, just as the current AMOLED on the Note 3.

The curved-screen Galaxy Note 3 is expected to run on a quad-core chip (likely the Snapdragon 800).

An interesting new measure to compare flexible screens is just how much they bend. Samsung’s display is the champion in that regard as it sports a curvature radius of 400mm, more than twice that of LG’s rival technology.

Right now, Samsung Display confirmed its using its 5.5-Gen line for making the screens. Its monthly capacity is limited at around 1 million screens per month.(SlashGear)PhoneArena

Banks Ditched Payday Lending Like Programs But What’s Next

Bank may have exited the payday lending business this month, but that doesn’t mean their next foray into small dollar loans will be any less predatory. That’s why the National Consumer Law Center is urging banks to show leadership in developing affordable credit options for consumers.

Since the beginning of January, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, Fifth Third Bank, Regions Bank, Bank of Oklahoma and its affiliates and Guaranty Bank responded to new regulatory pressure by discontinuing their deposit advance programs. However, many of the banks said they plan to develop an alternative short-term credit option for customers.

The National Consumer Law Center wants to make sure those new programs offer affordable, responsible small dollar loan options for consumers. And one way banks can achieve that is by capping the annual percentage rate at no more than 36%.

While a 36% APR is still a relatively high interest rate for a small loan, it would be a marked improvement to the typical payday loan APR of 200-300%.

The report points out the lower rate has been endorsed repeatedly at the state and federal level, results in payments that consumers can realistically afford and gives lenders incentive to offer longer term loans with a more affordable structure.

“The foundation of every responsible loan, whether it is a mortgage or a $300 loan, is ensuring that the consumer has the ability to repay the loan while meeting other expenses without reborrowing or entering into a cycle of debt,” Lauren Saunders, managing attorney for the NCLC says in a statement.

Other criteria set forth in the document that banks should consider are:

  • Underwriting for ability to pay, not for ability to collect.

  • Amortizing installment payments instead of balloon payments.

  • At least 90 days to repay the loan.

  • No check holding or required (or coerced) automated repayment.

Banks’ deposit advance services differed little from the typical storefront payday loan operation – both offered high-interest, short-term loans meant to get consumers out of emergency financial situations, but in reality have been found to trap them in an ongoing cycle of debt.

Criticism over bank-backed short-term, high-risk loans grew louder in the past several years, both from consumers and regulatory agencies.

Last summer, a California woman told a Senate panel how a $500 loan from Wells Fargo’s Direct Deposit Advance program resulted in $3,000 in fees.

In November, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), which oversee institutions such as Wells Fargo and U.S. Bank, issued a 22-page guidance document essentially telling the banks to end payday loan-esque practices.

Google App Engine integration features in IntelliJ IDEA and PyCharm

Today’s guest post comes from Maarten Balliauw, Technical Evangelist at JetBrains, the vendor of smart developer tools such as IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, PhpStorm, Android Studio and many more.

We build tools that enhance developer productivity and code quality. We do this by providing plugins that support integration with databases, frameworks, and services, such as Google App Engine. In this post, we will look at how we’ve made it easier to deploy to Google App Engine from PyCharm or IntelliJ IDEA.

PyCharm Professional Edition comes with Google App Engine Integration built in. For IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate you need to enable it by installing the Google App Engine Integration plugin.

Once integration is enabled, you can create a new Google App Engine application, open a sample shipped with the Google App Engine SDK or open an existing project you may have.

Creating a new project in PyCharm

The IDE will ask for some additional information, such as the Google App Engine application id. Once that is done, the IDE will create a new project structure in which you can start working.

All the various coding assistance features in the IDE are available: syntax and error highlighting, automatic indentation, code completion and more. The Google App Engine SDK directory is automatically added to Libraries in your IDE so all the APIs and classes will provide autocompletion.

Code completion in IntelliJ IDEA knows about App Engine APIs

The IDEs also offer code inspections for common problems and issues in code. For example, PyCharm features some inspections that report the use of language features restricted on GAE and so on. IntelliJ IDEA provides similar inspections.

Google App Engine specific code inspections in Pycharm

During development, you can run your application locally without having to upload it to Google App Engine. The IDE provides a special run/debug configuration that launches your application locally.

Once started, you can navigate to it in your browser at the http://localhost:8080 URL, by default. The Run tool window at the bottom of the IDE will show the output of the GAE application server you launched locally.

Running Google App Engine Java app locally

If instead of using the Run button you use the Debug button (or Shift+F9), the IDE attaches a debugger to your application server. You can now add breakpoints in your application and inspect variables and so on using the Debug tool window once a breakpoint has been hit.

Debugging Google App Engine application in IntelliJ IDEA

Once you feel your application is ready to go live, you can deploy it to Google App Engine Appspot. From the Tools > Google App Engine > Upload App Engine app menu, you can trigger the upload. This will open a new tool window in which you enter your Google Account credentials. The IDE will run the appcfg.py tool and display the output.

Google Compute Engine Expanded Availability New Features and Lower Prices

Cross-posted with the Google Developers Blog

Starting today, Google Compute Engine is available to all customers who sign up for our Gold Support package. We’re also happy to announce a 4% reduction on all Compute Engine pricing.

In the nine months since announcing Compute Engine, customers have been using Google’s Infrastructure as a Service product and giving us valuable feedback. Sebastian Stadil of Scalr wrote, in a recent review:

“Google Compute Engine is not just fast. It’s Google fast. In fact, it’s a class of fast that enables new service architectures entirely.”

We’re happy to hear that, because one of our main goals in building Compute Engine is to enable a new generation of applications with direct access to the capabilities of Google’s vast computing infrastructure.

Based on user feedback, we’ve added a number of major features including:

  • An improved administration console, the Google Cloud Console (preview), which allows you to administer all your Google Cloud Platform services via a unified interface.

Screenshot of new Cloud Console in action

  • Five new instance type families (diskless versions of our standard instance types, plus diskful and diskless versions of high-memory and high-cpu configurations), with 16 new instance types.

  • Two new supported zones in Europe, which provide lower latency and higher performance for our European customers. We’ve also made it easy to migrate virtual machine instances from one zone to another via an enhancement to our gcutil command line tool.

  • An enhanced metadata server, with the ability to support recursive queries, blocking gets and selectable response formats, along with support for updating virtual machine tags and metadata on running instances (which enables dynamic reconfiguration scenarios).

While weve been hard at work developing new features, weve also had the opportunity to play. Check out the amazing World Wide Maze Chrome Experiment, developed by the Chrome team in Japan. This game converts any web site of your choice into an interactive, three dimensional maze, navigated remotely via your smartphone. Compute Engine virtual machines run Node.js to manage the game state and synchronization with the mobile device, while Google App Engine hosts the game’s web UI. This application provides an excellent example of the new kinds of rich, high performance back end services enabled by Google Cloud Platform.

With today’s announcement, we look forward to welcoming many new customers, and bringing exciting new applications to Google Cloud Platform!

Easier faster and lower cost Big Data processing with the Google Cloud Storage Connector for Hadoop

Google Compute Engine VMs provide a fast and reliable way to run Apache Hadoop. Today, we’re making it easier to run Hadoop on Google Cloud Platform with the Preview release of the Google Cloud Storage connector for Hadoop that lets you focus on your data processing logic instead of on managing a cluster and file system.

Diagram of Hadoop on Google Cloud Platform. HDFS and the NameNode are optional when storing data in Google Cloud Storage

In the 10 years since we first introduced Google File System (GFS) — the basis for Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) — Google has continued to improve our storage system for large data processing. The latest iteration is Colossus.

Today’s launch delivers exactly that. Using a simple connector library, Hadoop can now run directly against Google Cloud Storage — an object store built on Colossus. That means you benefit from Google’s expertise in large data processing.

Here are a few other benefits of running Hadoop with Google Cloud Storage:

  • Compatibility: The Google Cloud Storage connector for Hadoop code-compatible with Hadoop. Just change the URL to point to your data.

  • Quick startup: Your data is ready to process. You don’t have to wait for extra minutes or more while your data is copied over to HDFS and the NameNode comes out of safe mode, and you don’t have to pay for the VM time for data copying either.

  • Greater availability and scalability: Google Cloud Storage is globally replicated and has higher availability than HDFS because it’s independent of the compute nodes and the NameNode. If the VMs are turned down (or, cloud forbid, crash) your data lives on.

  • Lower costs: Save on storage and compute: storage, because there’s no need to maintain two copies of your data, one for backups and one for running Hadoop; compute, because you don’t need to keep VMs going just to serve data. And with per-minute billing, you can run Hadoop jobs faster on more cores and know your costs aren’t getting rounded up to a whole hour.

  • No storage management overhead: Whereas HDFS requires routine maintenance -- like file system checks, rebalancing, upgrades, rollbacks and NameNode restarts -- Google Cloud Storage just works. Your data is safe and consistent with no extra effort.

  • Interoperability: By keeping your data in Google Cloud Storage, you can benefit from all of the other Google services that already play nicely together.

  • Performance: Google’s infrastructure delivers high performance from Google Cloud Storage that’s comparable to HDFS -- without the overhead and maintenance.

To see the benefits for yourself, give Hadoop on Google Cloud Platform a try by following the simple tutorial.

We would love to hear your feedback and ideas on how to make Hadoop and MapReduce run even better on Google Cloud Platform.

How to check your email from your phone and 50 other things you might want to teach your parents

My dad loves planning big family gatherings around the holidays. He always emails our extended family a few weeks early, and we’ll all plan out logistics in an email thread - food responsibilities, addresses, times-- everything. Logistics can get pretty crazy when it comes to the actual day of the event, and we’re rarely at a computer on that day. I always find that my dad starts to lose track of the million things in his email that he needs to remember.

If only my dad knew that he could check Gmail on his Android phone using either the built-in mail app or the web app. Then he could always keep track of his messages while on the go, especially during the busy holiday season.

To help my dad, and parents everywhere, a few of us at Google decided to create a website, TeachParentsTech.org, where “kids” of any age can send how-to videos to their moms, dads, uncles - everybody! Here’s a video I made that walks you through how to check email from your mobile phone.

To see more videos or to send someone a tech support care package of your own, visit TeachParentsTech.org.

Nokia Lumia 520 goes on sale for 50 off contract

Just a day after the Nokia Lumia 525 became official, its predecessor the Lumia 520 gets an impressive price cut. AT&T and the official Windows Store will be selling the phone for $50 starting today.

The price is for an off-contract device. Starting today select AT&T stores across the USA as well as the online Windows Store will be offering the Lumia 520 for $50. You dont have much time to make up your mind whether youll want it or not, because the promotion ends December 2.

The Nokia Lumia 520 is by far the greatest bestseller of the Finns and we liked it a lot when we reviewed it. Admittedly, Nokia has cut some corners here and there to make the Lumia 520 as affordable as it could possibly be, but at $50 buying it is a no-brainer.

Nokia is yet to put a price tag on the Lumia 525. Hopefully, the manufacturer wont go much higher than the Lumia 520.

Performance advantages of the new Google Cloud Storage Connector for Hadoop

Our guest blog post today comes from Mike Wendt, R&D Associate Manager at Accenture Technology Labs, who recently published a study detailing the real world performance advantages of Hadoop on Google Compute Engine. His team utilized the recently launched Google Cloud Storage Connector for Hadoop and observed significant performance improvements over HDFS on local filesystems

Hadoop clusters tend to be deployed on bare-metal; however, they are increasingly deployed on cloud environments such as Google Compute Engine. Benefits such as pay-per-use pricing, scalability and performance tuning make cloud a practical option for Hadoop deployments. At Accenture Technology Labs, we were interested in proving the value of cloud over bare-metal and devised a method for a price-performance-ratio comparison of a bare-metal Hadoop cluster with cloud-based Hadoop clusters at the matched total-cost-of-ownership level.

As a part of this effort we created the Accenture Data Platform Benchmark comprising three real-world MapReduce applications to benchmark execution times for each platform. Collaborating with Google engineers we chose Google Compute Engine for our most recent version of this study and leveraged the Google Cloud Storage Connector for Hadoop within our experiments. For a look at the detailed report, you can find it here.

Original experiment setup

In conducting our experiments we used Google Compute Engine instances with local disks and streaming MapReduce jobs to copy input/output data to/from the local HDFS within our Hadoop clusters.

Figure 1. Data-flow model using input and output copies to local disk HDFS

As shown in Figure 1, this data-flow method provided us with the data we needed for our benchmarks at the cost of the total execution time, with the additional copy input and output phases. In addition to increased execution times, this data-flow model also resulted in more complex code for launching and managing experiments. The added code required modification of our testbench scripts to include the necessary copies and extra debugging and testing time to ensure the scripts were correct.

Modified experiment setup using Google Cloud Storage Connector for Hadoop

During our initial testing Google engineers approached us and offered an opportunity to use the Google Cloud Storage Connector for Hadoop (“the connector”) before its general release. We were eager to use the connector since it would simplify our scripted workflows and improve data movement. Integrating the connector into our workflows was straightforward and required minimal effort. Once the connector was configured we were able to change our data-flow model removing the need for copies and giving us the ability to directly access Google Cloud Storage for input data and write output data.

Figure 2. Data-flow model using Google Cloud Storage Connector for Hadoop

Figure 2 shows the direct access of input data by the MapReduce job(s) and ability to write output data directly to Google Cloud Storage all without additional copies via streaming MapReduce jobs. Not only did the connector reduce our execution times by removing the input and output copy phases, but the ability to access the input data from Google Cloud Storage proved unexpected performance benefits. We were able to see further decreases in our execution times due to the high availability of the input data compared to traditional HDFS access, which are detailed in the “result of experiments” section.

Result of experiments

The results of our experiments with the three workloads of the Accenture Data Platform Benchmark are detailed below. For each workload we examine the data access pattern of the workload and the performance of the Google Cloud Storage Connector for Hadoop.

Recommendation engine

In Figure 3, we can see that using the connector resulted in an average execution time savings of 24.4 percent when compared to “Local Disk HDFS (w/ copy times).” Of the savings, 86.0 percent (or 21.0 percent overall) came from removing the need for input and output data copies, and 14.0 percent of the savings (or 3.4 percent overall) by using the connector to retrieve input and save output data. The performance impact of the connector is not as strong as the other workloads because this workload utilizes a smaller dataset.

The opportunity for speed-up using the connector is dependent on the amount of reads and writes to Google Cloud Storage. Because the workload reads input data only in the first job and writes output data only in the last of the ten cascaded jobs, there is limited opportunity to improve the execution time using the connector. Also the relatively small dataset (5 GB) for the recommendation engine is able to be processed more quickly on the Google Compute Engine instances and results in less data that needs to be moved between Google Cloud Storage and the cluster.

Figure 3. Recommendation engine execution times

Sessionization

The sessionization workload rearranges a large dataset (24 TB uncompressed; ~675 GB compressed), in a single MapReduce job. This CPU and memory intensive workload benefited significantly from the use of the Google Cloud Storage Connector for Hadoop. Using the connector resulted in an average execution time savings of 26.2 percent when compared to “Local Disk HDFS (w/ copy times).” Of the savings, 25.6 percent (or 6.7 percent overall) came from removing the need for input and output data copies, and 74.4 percent of the savings (or 19.5 percent overall) by using the connector as shown in Figure 4. This large speed-up from the connector is thanks to the nature of the workload as a single MapReduce job. Overhead with the NameNode and data locality issues such as streaming data to other nodes for processing can be avoided by using the connector to supply all nodes with data equally and evenly. This proves that even with remote storage, data locality concerns can be overcome by using Google Cloud Storage and the provided connector to see greater results than using traditional local disk HDFS.

Figure 4. Sessionization execution times

Document clustering

Similar speed-ups from the connector were observed with the document-clustering workload. Using the connector resulted in an average execution time savings of 20.6 percent when compared to “Local Disk HDFS (w/ copy times).” Of the savings, 26.8 percent (or 5.5 percent overall) came from removing the need for input and output data copies, and 73.2 percent of the savings (or 15.0 percent overall) by using the connector as shown in Figure 5. Owing to the large amount of data processed (~31,000 files with a size of 3 TB) by the first MapReduce job of the document-clustering workload, the connector is able to transfer this data to the nodes much faster, resulting in the speed-up when compared to local disk HDFS.

Figure 5. Document clustering execution times

Conclusion

From our study, we can see that remote storage powered by the Google Cloud Storage connector for Hadoop actually performs better than local storage. The increased performance can be seen in all three of our workloads to varying degrees based on their access patterns. Workloads like sessionization and document clustering read input data from 14,800 and about 31,000 files, respectively, and see the largest improvements because the files are accessible from every node in the cluster. Availability of the files, and their chunks, is no longer limited to three copies within the cluster, which eliminates the dependence on the three nodes that contain the data to process the file or to transfer the file to an available node for processing.

In comparison, the recommendation engine workload has only one input file of 5 GB. With remote storage and the connector, we still see a performance increase in reading this large file because it is not in several small 64 MB or 128 MB chunks that must be streamed from multiple nodes in the cluster to the nodes processing the chunks of the file. Although this performance increase is not as large as the other workloads (14.0 percent compared with 73.2 to 74.4 percent with the other workloads), we can still see the value of using remote storage to provide faster access and greater availability of data when compared with the HDFS data locality model. This availability of remote storage on the scale and size provided by Google Cloud Storage unlocks a unique way of moving and storing large amounts of data that is not available with bare-metal deployments.

Additionally, our recent study reinforced our original findings. First, cloud-based Hadoop deployments offer better price-performance ratios than bare-metal clusters. Second, the benefit of performance tuning is so huge that cloud’s virtualization layer overhead is a worthy investment as it expands performance-tuning opportunities. Third, despite the sizable benefit, the performance-tuning process is complex and time-consuming and thus requires automated tuning tools.

Extending our original findings, we were able to observe the performance impact of data locality and remote storage within the cloud. While counterintuitive, our experiments prove that using remote storage to make data highly available outperforms local disk HDFS relying on data locality. The performance benefits we were able to see with the Google Cloud Storage Connector for Hadoop can be realized with other MapReduce applications and helps to accelerate the adoption of Hadoop deployments on Google Compute Engine.
