The Moto X has been quite the surprise of a device. I mean we got a device with a high-end price tag, until recently, along with a device with lower-end specs that still outperforms some other devices with much better specs. It’s also one of the first devices to get Android 4.4 – KitKat. Which one of the downsides to getting the update so quickly, is the root situation. While there is already a way to root Android 4.4 on the Moto X, it’s a rather complicated way of doing it. However, XDA member 640k has taken all the work that Justin Case has done to root the Moto X and put it into an executable script, but please use caution while using this script.
While we do love rooting our devices, although these days the reasons to root are getting smaller and smaller, we do want our readers to be aware of what they are getting themselves into before they embark on this journey. We don’t want our inbox to fill up with frustrated or panicked users that may have bricked their Moto X. If your Moto X is on Android 4.4. and you run this script, it involves re-imaging your device with 4.2.2 two different times before getting you updated to 4.4 with root intact. As well as the locked bootloader on the Moto X makes recovering a failed flash very difficult, so we urge all of you that before you start on this, to be sure you know what you’re doing.
The script needs a few downloads to get it working correctly, the script only runs on Windows right now and needs Motorola drivers installed, a fresh download of Android 4.2.2 an the exploits themselves. Put all of those into a folder, the script will guide the user through how to bring root access to their device.
So it’s not a new way of rooting the Moto X, but just a somewhat easier way. I still like rooting Nexus devices much better, as they are essentially a piece of cake to root.
